Engineering notes for buyers of hydraulic machines

A press delivers force equal to system pressure multiplied by piston area. What decides the size you need is the work itself: the material, its thickness, the shape being formed and how far the tool travels under load.

Add a working margin so the machine is not run at its rated limit every cycle, then check bed size, daylight, stroke and speed against your die. Sharing the component drawing lets our engineers size all of this together.

A C-frame gives open access to the work area, which suits lighter jobs such as straightening and assembly. An H-frame is stiffer and built for heavier pressing and forming.

A four-column press spreads the load evenly across a larger bed, which suits deep drawing and moulding where parallelism matters.

Start with the component: alloy, casting weight and die dimensions. These set the die-holding size, the stroke and whether a tilting or stationary machine fits.

Then define cycle time, cooling and ejection arrangements, and how much automation you want around the operator.

Motor power in kW is roughly pressure in bar multiplied by flow in litres per minute, divided by 600 times the pump efficiency.

A larger reservoir helps the oil stay cool and release air. A common rule of thumb is to size it at several times the pump flow per minute, with filtration and cooling chosen for your duty cycle.

Contaminated oil, side loads from misalignment and scored piston rods are the usual causes. Each of them wears seals faster than normal service does.

Clean filtration, correct mounting alignment and rod protection do more for cylinder life than replacing seals more often.
